You are limited in the amount of contrast you can achieve. To this end I would try and limit the surrounding image to have similar contrast to the subject I am interested in. Also note that you will likely loose the muzzle flash as it will be fainter than your flash so you will need to add a somewhat longer exposure than the flash to capture more of the light from the flash. This you can experiment with without the high speed flash unit.

The best way to get the camera out of the loop is to simply set up your scene, check what settings the camera is suggesting and then set it to FULL manual and recreate the settings and see if it gives a reasonable picture. Use those same settings for all the comparison shots.

I expect a moderate resolution image with low-pass filtering will produce the best results. The samples I have look much better when viewed from one side. I have not prepared any myself.

The first is a single pixel range finder that seems rather nice but not applicable a bit expensive for what you get but the system is configurable so that can be forgiven I suppose.

That is pretty cool but not the technology I remember. It was intended to determine the range to an object from the time of flight for the return of a flash exposure. The idea was to use it as a HID to detect finger movement over a printed keyboard for instance where you cannot necessarily see the motion of the fingers if they lift and fall on the same key or how long they press down. (more) |
